Sometimes I think I will not be able to find a PR job, I mean, I have no experience. And I really don't want to start as a "grunt." Are there companies out there hiring recent PR graduates that have no experience and are....over 45 years old? I am traveling to a place that is unfamiliar to me. I don't even know where this place is, nor a route. All I know is that my mode of transportation is prepared and ready. My blog is my car. I have no map, no Garmin Nuvi nor a Tomtom. I will figure it out as I go. In two months, I will have my bachelor's degree. Unanswered questions: do I want to work in PR, and if so, in what capacity? Media relations, crisis management? Or do I take my degree and make a sharp turn, say, pharmaceutical sales rep? Or work in an IT department of a hospital? I'll figure it out as I go.
And then there's Spanish. I've two semesters under my belt and I am not fluent, not a great conversationalist in Espanol. But I want to be. Badly. At times I imagine that I find work in Mexico, or Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, etc. I am there long enough to be called "bilingual." Part of me says, "it could happen" and another part says, "dream on" as I am reminded of my family. My children, two in college, and another soon to be. They are older and can take care of themselves, I say as I drive my blog through this unfamiliar place. Stop at a little hole in the wall called "besides, it would be temporary, a year at most." I'll figure it out as I go.
I won't be traveling alone either. My passengers are a mix of readers, professionals, students, hitchhikers and drifters. I don't mind giving them a ride because it's nice to communicate with someone. Undoubtedly, there will be rough patches, I'll either travel slow, or go around them. The search for employment could be a rough patch. If I can't get a job that I absolutely love, than I'll get my Master's degree (I didn't need to capitalize that, right?).
Getting back to the job search, I was a travel agent for over 20 years, up until four years ago. I can check out the travel industry for PR and other jobs. You got your planes, trains, and automobiles. Your hotels, tour companies, and cruise lines. There's travelers insurance. I'll figure it out as I go.
I should probably give a brief of my coursework. I am in a PR campaigns and PR cases. A business management, Economics, and an English course. Then before you know it, I'll be walking down the aisle to receive my certificate. Funny thing is, I never, ever thought I'd do this, enroll in college, that is. Well, what I mean is, I always imagined it, but never thought it'd be a reality. Summer 2006, I enrolled and have not stopped, including every Summer since enrollment. In fact, I will finish in 3.5 years. Atypical, aren't I?
Well, I see a rest stop and I need to sleep. Goodnight passengers.
